About BBA

The BAC Beatbox Academy is a weekly drop-in session on Thursdays 6 – 8pm, for young people of all abilities and experience with an interest in music to jam together, improve their beatbox and vocal skills, and make their own music – from hip hop and grime to R&B and dubstep.

The BAC Beatbox Academy has been running for 15 years (est. 2008) and is led by hip-hop theatre practitioner and artistic director Conrad Murray, who is a theatre maker, director, singer, beatboxer, and loop artist. The weekly group is also co-facilitated by other professional performers with years of experience in performance and vocal arts.

BBA Projects Past and Present

Many of the young people who have come though the BAC Beatbox Academy are now successful artists, using the skills gained through the academy to generate income, and be leaders in their community.

The BAC Beatbox Academy participants have been able to work with such organisations as Sky, BBC, Stink Films, Roundhouse, Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh International Festival, Latitude Festival, Strike-A-Light, ITV and many more.

Frankenstein: How To Make a Monster

The Beatbox Academy created FRANKENSTEIN: How To Make a Monster, a critically acclaimed, international multi-award winning 5 star rated hip-hop theatre show which toured nationally. With just the power of the human voice, 6 academy members re-tell Mary Shelly’s classic novel with a modern twist, exploring what it is to be a modern-day monster.

Pied Piper: A Hip-Hop Family Musical

Pied Piper was created by Conrad Murray and Beatbox Academy members, and is a reimagining of the medieval fairy tale, beatbox style! The show is currently touring nationally, running workshops in each tour region engaging with local young people who form a ‘community chorus’. This chorus take to the stage for a segment of the show, showcasing their freshly learned beatbox talents, and performing alongside the professional cast.

Venues have included Battersea Arts Centre, Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre and many more.
