This Halloween, a society on the brink crumbles into grime, decay and dissolution.
Witty, gritty opera La Dame de Pique (The Queen of Spades) by Fromental Halévy premiered in 1850 but has never been staged since.
Featuring a cast of exciting emerging singers and a chamber orchestra, this operatic game of power will transport you to the dying days of the Ancien Régime in France.
Loosely based on the Pushkin story of the same name, Halévy’s La Dame de Pique pre-dates Tchaikovsky’s better-known opera adaptation by forty years.
In a story perfect for the spooky season, a shifting web of ambition, strategy, and survival is played out across every level of society… but the dealer always wins.

Biographies
Gothic Opera
Based in London, award-winning and female-led company Gothic Opera is becoming increasingly well known among audiences, critics, and artists for their bold, atmospheric productions of rarely-heard operatic works with supernatural themes. With a flagship production each Halloween, a central aim of the company is the desire to open up the art form to those who are not familiar with it.
Founded by Alice Usher, Béatrice de Larragoïti and Charlotte Osborn, Gothic Opera launched in 2019 with a production of Der Vampyr by Marschner that put the company firmly on the map. Their Halloween 2021 opera La Nonne sanglante (The Bloody Nun) was the winner of the Opera Production category in the Off-West End Awards. Previous productions at BAC: UK premieres Die Rheinnixen (The Nixies of the Rhine) by Offenbach, and Maria de Rudenz by Donizetti.
