What do we hear when we listen below the surface? Sometimes music says far more than first meets the ear.
Making his debut with Chromatica Orchestra, the orchestra’s newly-appointed Principal Conductor Oliver Cope has put together a programme of psychological suspense, Hollywood glamour and Soviet satire that reveals the stories hiding inside some remarkable music.
Bernard Herrmann’s iconic soundtrack for the film Psycho brings Hitchcock’s world of tension and terror to life, while Korngold’s sumptuous Violin Concerto, which marked his return to the concert hall following his war-time exile, transforms themes from his Hollywood films into a dazzling showcase for soloist Sarang Seohyun Kim, who celebrates her 18th birthday on stage this evening.
Instead of the expected monumental celebration of Soviet victory in World War II, Shostakovich’s Symphony No:9 delivers something altogether more mischievous: a compact, witty and wonderfully unpredictable work whose cheerful surface may conceal something rather darker.

Biographies
Chromatica Orchestra
Chromatica Orchestra is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musical talent, bringing together outstanding emerging orchestral players with brilliant soloists. Oliver Cope was appointed the orchestra’s first Principal Conductor in 2026, taking up the role at the opening of its third season.
Oliver Cope
A prize-winning harpist and pianist, 27-year-old Oliver Cope read music at the University of Cambridge before studying conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and winning prizes at numerous international conducting competition. He has conducted orchestras across the UK and Europe including the Hallé, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester and Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and recently appeared here at Battersea Arts Centre conducting Stravinsky‘s The Rake’s Progress for British Youth Opera.
Sarang Seohyun Kim
South Korean violinist Sarang Seohyun Kim was revealed as a rising star on the international stage when she became the youngest-ever winner of the 2023 Tibor Varga International Competition aged just 14. Born in 2008, Sarang garnered attention for her extraordinary performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto at Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Concert in 2025 and in 2026, she has toured Germany and Korea with the WDR Sinfonieorchester. She makes her UK orchestral debut with Chromatica Orchestra tonight.

This event takes place in person in our Grand Hall. This space is on the ground floor, with step-free access via a lift.
