How much do you trust your own eyes? Witness a double bill of world-class contemporary magic, focused on sleight of hand, illusion and trickery.

Black Magic

In Black Magic, two magicians work closely together, despite being physically distant.

Exploring techniques of black theatre and double exposure – reminiscent of 19th-century trick photography- they seamlessly merge traditional methods with modern technology, to create illusions in real time, blurring the boundaries between the virtual and the real.

Iterations

Iterations centres on Cassani’s obsession with the skill and precision of sleight of hand magic.

In an exposé of the practising magician, the show explores how impossibilities emerge through simple repetition, actions, gestures and self-reflection. Through deconstructed routines, audiences are invited to reflect and reinterpret.

See how placing a coin into a pocket becomes a lifetime’s work, and discover just how hard it is to make the impossible look effortless.

Biography

Kalle Nio is a stage director, visual artist and magician. He works in the fields of visual theatre, experimental film, new magic, contemporary circus and visual arts. Nio’s group WHS is one of the most internationally active Finnish performance art groups, with their works performed in over 200 theatres in more than 40 countries. Nio has received several awards for his work in magic, visual arts, and stage productions.

Luis Sartori do Vale is a performing artist, director and visual artist. Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, he’s currently based in Helsinki, Finland. In 2012 he co-founded the Finnish company Nuua, becoming a laureate of the international project Circus Next, with the performance LENTO. With the same performance, he has been awarded the Special Prize of the Jury in the 35th Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain, in Paris.

Tom Cassani is a UK-based performance maker working with choreography, magic and live art. His performances draw on an expanded approach to magic examining the nature of perception and truth. Using his body as a site of deception, he explores the construct of performing the impossible. Cassani’s illusory texts, imagery and physicality expose the body as an unreliable measure of truth, and his unique approach reveals the mechanics of trickery ensuring we stay aware of our own role in experiencing something that isn’t real.
