In a world where most of us memorise nothing more poetic than passwords and pin numbers, what is the value of a show built around 10 people learning a Shakespeare sonnet by heart?

“As you can see, there are ten empty chairs on the stage. I’d like for ten spectators to come sit on them. Before you accept my invitation enthusiastically, I need to add that those ten spectators will have to learn a text by heart. It’s a short text, not too difficult, but not too simple, either. Those ten spectators won’t have to act. They won’t have to do anything in particular. Everything will be calm and normal.”

For the past ten years, director of Festival d’Avignon, Tiago Rodrigues, has presented By Heart – a heartrending show, the result of a request from his grandmother as she was going blind.

Combining Shakespeare’s sonnet and the writings of George Steiner, Boris Pasternak and Ray Bradbury, the performance makes its UK premiere as a true manifesto for the power of poetry through the creation of an unexpected community.

‘Rodrigues uses his memorization exercise to create an intimate performance that connects people through text.’ The New York Times

‘An idiosyncratic and ultimately profound meditation on the rewards and challenges of memorizing great literature.’ The Washington Post

‘Celebrates the essence of theatre as something made by people in a shared space, together.’ The Theatre Times

On 14 Oct there will be a post-show Q&A with Tim Crouch and the company, lasting 30 minutes.

Biographies

Portuguese actor Tiago Rodrigues joined the Belgian company Tg Stan at the age of twenty, where he developed his acting, his writing for the theatre, and his taste for the collective.

As an author and director, he founded the company Mundo Perfeito with Magda Bizarro in 2003, before becoming director of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in Lisbon from 2015 to 2021. Combining true stories and fiction, and weaving together the intimate and the political, Tiago’s shows are deeply influenced by the idea of writing with and for the actors, and his quest for a transformation of our conscience through the tools of theatre. His aim is to bring us together to question our world thanks to the power of the words, of the bodies, and of the imagination of the spectators. He currently serves as director of the Festival d’Avignon, where he has presented several shows, including Antony and Cleopatra in 2015, Sopro in 2017, The Cherry Orchard in 2021, and By Heart and Dans la mesure de l’impossible in 2023.

We know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If you can afford to pay the recommended price or more, choosing to do so supports those that can’t. It makes it possible for us to continue to offer Pay What You Can and welcome those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend.
