This performance takes place in person in our Council Chamber. The drop-in Writing Café will take place in Tom’s Café.

An ambitious new work-in-progress play interrogating friendship, diagnosis and queer identity.

Written and starring Next Gen Producer Nay Oliver Murphy (HBFS with PappyShow, Good Grief Netflix, Tribe of Two BBC Radio 4) alongside Catherine Ashdown (Grud, Hampstead Theatre, The Hunt Union Theatre, Home Safe Novalux), The Definition follows the story of old friends Charlie and Sophia as they pack up Charlie’s family cottage.

However, as time goes on, Charlie’s secret intentions for this reunion weekend are soon brought to light and Sophia’s world is turned upside down (literally). A delicate story of an unusual friendship that blurs the lines between Imagination and Science, Love and Obsession.

As the first audience of this brand-new play you are an important part of the creative process and there will be the opportunity to submit feedback to inform the next stages of the production.

Drop-in Writing Café

Alongside the performance, the creative team welcome you to join an optional drop-in writing space open in Tom’s Café for audience members who may feel inspired to work on their own projects before or after watching The Definition. As a facilitated space, there will be a traffic light system in place to inform your level of engagement; grab a green sticker if open to connecting with peers, or red if you would prefer to focus without being disturbed. Whatever your pace, the team would love to have you join them for a dedicated afternoon to work on your own practice.

Biographies

Nay Oliver Murphy

Nay Oliver Murphy is an actor and theatre-maker. He is the Director of Naked Bear Theatre and  graduate of BA Acting CDT at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Most recently, he appeared as Yankl in Yankl and The Beanstalk (Pleasance Theatre). In his writing, Nay uses humour to unveil a darker truth and explores finding ways to weave his poetry into otherwise naturalistic dialogue. As a trans writer, Nay is currently exploring the impact of including transness as a part of a story or character, rather than as the focus. He believes this is both an accurate representation of the trans experience and a productive method of normalizing trans stories and bodies.

He has been writing The Definition since January and held a two-day Research and Development session in February.

We want our shows to be as accessible to as many people as possible.

We offer tickets to most shows on a Pay What You Can basis throughout the year.

Tickets for Homegrown Festival performances in 2025 start at £4, and we have recommended pricing to help you choose a price that works for you.

We know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If you can afford to pay the recommended price or more, choosing to do so supports those that can’t. It makes it possible for us to continue to offer Pay What You Can and welcome those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend.
